After some encouragement to explore the Burns Blog I have been hearing so much about at home, I am pleased to see its success.

I wanted to comment on this latest entry, as the term ‘core values’ stuck out at me. As a member of an Engineering Leadership Program (ELP) at Iowa State University, the importance of having core values is highly encouraged in leadership development.

We encourage the students in the program as they reach their graduation dates to look for companies that will fit their needs. Companies that publicly display their core values and emphasize their impact stand out amongst the rest.

To end, I am pleased to know BE is one of these companies and it is great to see the leadership potential even in an engineering environment, because we are so much more than pocket-protecting, differentiating, Fourier transforming people. (so we think)

Thanks for the note Adam. I graduated from St. John’s University in 1982. One of the classes required to graduate was Ethics and Values. I remember several lively discussions we had with our classmates and professors around the idea of how to integrate Ethics and Values into our future careers. It’s been a true privilege to be able to practice this in the family business.

Wow! Seeing the photo of my brother Jim doing terminal blocks brings back many memories of working at BE. I did assembly work, janitorial work and office work. Some of the tasks I performed are now done by machine. Yes, things have changed but core values are always with us.
When I started working with homeless people after college I realized all I had learned from my parents that I took for granted. BE’s core values are ones we can all use in daily life.
An important one for all of us in our work life or home life is Value Each Other. I value my dad who started BE, my brothers who continue the work, the employees at BE I worked with more than 20 years ago who are still there, the rest of my family and in a variety of ways anyone else I have met in my life. We all can find value in people we meet in one way or another.

Well another year has gone by and now I’ve celebrated 21 years at Burns Engineering. One thing hasn’t changed and that’s our commitment to BEing temperature measurements experts. We like to refer to it as TME. To all of you who breath temperature we’re glad you’ve tuned in to the blog. Keep coming back for more great stuff.
